# Can Today’s Way of Working Support Your Growth Plan?

In my recent blog post [Your Business Has a Plan for Growth. Does Your Technology?](https://www.monroebusinesssolutions.com/blog/your-business-has-a-plan-for-growth.-does-your-technology), I shared three questions business leaders can ask as they plan for growth. This article will focus on the first question, which is:

**What does our 3-5 year business plan require us to do differently than we do today?**

**Step 1: Look beyond the goal.**

“Double revenue while maintaining quality” or “grow our team to serve more customers” gives you a destination. What will need to happen along the way?

You don’t need every detail of the next five years figured out today. But you do need to identify what the business must become capable of doing, and what progress should look like in the nearer term.

**Step 2: Identify what needs to change in the business.**

Suppose you plan to win more customers while retaining the ones you have. Will every salesperson do both, or will some focus on new relationships and others on existing customers? Which products fit each group? How will you spot a customer who needs attention before you lose them?

Those answers may change your team’s roles, skills, handoffs, and the information people need to make decisions. Ask where your current way of working would struggle if you reached your growth target.

**Step 3: Decide what your processes and systems need to support.**

If your plan involves hiring and developing more people, look at how you recruit, onboard, train, and track skills. If it involves more products or customers, look at how you manage sales, orders, inventory, and service.

Then consider the technology behind that work. Can you improve a process or make better use of software you already have? Do existing systems need to share information? Would an upgrade help, or has the business outgrown a system?

**Start with one business goal.** Work through what must change to achieve it, then identify the first process, skill, or system that needs attention.

That’s how a technology plan begins to support the business you’re building.
